55 Years With Wm O’Brien — Mick’s Legacy
More than five decades with the same company is no small feat — especially when that company has seen so many changes! The longest-serving employee at Wm O’Brien Self Storage, Mick Cotter, has had quite a journey.
It started back in 1969 when the business was all about cranes and waste management. Now, as we celebrate 20 years in self storage, Mick’s story offers a unique perspective on how the business has evolved — and how his role has grown alongside it.
In our interview, Mick, now Senior Facility Coordinator at Wm O’Brien, hints at the unseen hours of hard work, the many milestones along the way, and provides us with a little bit of history.
When Did You Start Working With Wm. O’Brien?
I joined in 1969, back when Wm. O’Brien was solely focused on crane hire and waste management. Aside from two short breaks, I’ve been with the company ever since — 55 years in total!
How Has Your Role Evolved Over the Years?
I started by operating cranes and doing repairs. Over time, I moved into safety management, making sure everything ran smoothly and safely. Now, I assist with the maintenance of our buildings, container parks and customer move-ins. I’ve also had the chance to work all over Europe — from Scotland and England to France and Germany.
What Are the Biggest Changes You’ve Seen in the Self Storage Industry?
The biggest change has definitely been the advancement of equipment and technology. It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come — from manual processes to automated systems that make things easier for both customers and our team. Whether it’s booking van jobs or using security systems, everything is more streamlined now.
Do You Remember the Transition From Crane Hire to Storage?
Absolutely. The site we’re on now used to be offices. The land was initially earmarked for a drive-in cinema, but eventually, it was decided to branch into self storage.
Where the containers are now was once a bustling crane yard with around 150–200 people working there, including a large number in Cork.
How Has Working With Different Teams Shaped Your Experience?
Working with hardworking, quick-thinking people has taught me how to get things done faster and more effectively. A good team makes all the difference.
What Advice Would You Give to Your Younger Self?
Buy a self storage facility! It’s been a fantastic business to be part of since day one.
What Stands Out From Your Time With Wm. O’Brien?
The Tug of War team we had is one of the highlights. It was a great team-building experience that brought everyone together. We should bring it back!
